What AnkiVocab collects

AnkiVocab collects only the data necessary to generate vocabulary flashcards:

  • Selected text and sentence context: When you highlight a word or phrase and request a flashcard, the extension sends the selected word or phrase, the surrounding sentence, and the page URL to the AnkiVocab API. This data is used solely to generate your flashcard.
  • API key: Your API key is stored locally in your browser (via Chrome storage sync) and sent with each request to authenticate you. It is never shared with third parties.
  • User preferences: Settings such as theme preference and API endpoint are stored locally in your browser.

What AnkiVocab does NOT collect

  • Browsing history or web activity
  • Personally identifiable information (name, email, address)
  • Cookies or tracking data
  • Data from pages you do not actively interact with

How data is used

  • Selected text and context are sent to the AnkiVocab API (ankivocab.com) exclusively to generate flashcard content (definition, IPA, synonyms, example sentence, image, and audio).
  • Generated flashcards are stored in your AnkiVocab account and can be exported or deleted at any time.
  • No data is sold, shared with, or transferred to third parties.
  • No data is used for advertising, analytics, or profiling purposes.

Data storage and retention

  • Browser-side data (API key, preferences, page highlights) is stored locally via chrome.storage.sync and chrome.storage.local.
  • Server-side data (generated flashcards) is stored in your AnkiVocab account. You can delete individual cards or your entire account at any time.

Third-party services

  • The extension bundles Tailwind CSS locally for UI styling. No external stylesheets are loaded.
  • All API communication is encrypted via HTTPS.

Your rights

You can:

  • View and delete your flashcards at ankivocab.com/dashboard
  • Remove the extension at any time, which deletes all locally stored data
  • Request account deletion by contacting support
