Maria hadn't painted in five years. Once a promising art student, she had abandoned her dreams to become an accountant. Her younger brother Lucas, who was studying sculpture, always looked up to her creative talent, even though she no longer believed in herself.

One Tuesday afternoon, Lucas invited an unexpected guest to Maria's apartment: Mr. Chen, a retired art teacher who had discovered Maria's old portfolio online. "Your work is extraordinary," Mr. Chen said, examining her paintings carefully. "Why did you stop?"

Maria explained her doubts. Art seemed impractical. She needed job security. Mr. Chen listened patiently, then hit the nail on the head: "You're afraid of failing, so you've already failed by not trying."

His words struck her deeply. Over coffee, they discussed her future. Mr. Chen explained that in the long run, doing work you love matters more than earning money quickly. He offered to mentor her if she wanted to return to painting.

That evening, Maria made up her mind. She would paint again, but she needed to sort out her finances first. She couldn't quit her job immediately, but she could paint evenings and weekends.

Months passed. Maria's confidence slowly returned as she completed new pieces. When Lucas showed her work to his art school friends, the idea began to catch on. Soon, people were requesting commissions.

One year later, Maria held her first exhibition. Mr. Chen attended, proud and smiling. Lucas stood beside her proudly. Maria realized that sometimes the bravest decision isn't choosing between two paths—it's choosing yourself, even when you've waited too long.

"Thank you," she told Mr. Chen. "You reminded me why I loved this."

He smiled. "I just helped you remember what you already knew."
