Maya is an engineer. She works on an important bridge report. The report is due in five days. She uses the library to carry out her work on bridge designs. The project is big, but the time is short.

On Monday morning, Maya puts her materials on a big table. Her colleague James comes with coffee. He offers to chip in and help with the calculations. "I know about bridges," he says. "I can help you."

By Wednesday, they make good progress. Then Maya's supervisor calls. The presentation date moves to Friday. Maya tells James the news. James jokes, "Are you pulling my leg? That cannot be true!" But it is true.

That evening, Maya decides to take the lead on the hard parts. James works on pictures and numbers. They work late at the library. They drink bad coffee from the machine.

Thursday afternoon, James wants to bring up a problem. "Maya, we are very tired. Can we ask for more time?" Maya says no. "We said we would finish this. Let's do it."

By Friday morning, the report is finished and good. Their presentation is perfect. After, James suggests they call it a day and eat a nice meal. Maya says yes. She is happy and proud.

Sometimes, short deadlines help people do their best work. Maya and James show that together, they can do hard things.
